summary of the article

Why is my skin dry?

Internal causes

The primary cause of dry skin is genetic. In fact, your skin naturally produces little lipid, which makes it rough and dry. It can also be an illness, such as eczema, atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. Hereditary ichthyosis can also be a cause. It is a genetic disease characterized by extremely dry, rough skin and the presence of an excessive amount of scales. Furthermore, other diseases such as diabetes or kidney failure can increase the predisposition to skin dryness.

Finally, the hormonal imbalances can cause water loss in your epidermis. When you are pregnant, these variations can cause your body to undergo different changes, including causing dehydration : your skin then becomes more uncomfortable and more reactive.

External causes

If your skin is dry, it may be due to too frequent washing and the use of soaps that are too irritating, which also alter the hydrolipidic film of the skin.

The clothes too rough and synthetic materials that are in direct contact with the skin can also be the cause of drying out of your epidermis. Tobacco consumption also disrupts skin hydration. Finally, climatic conditions can also contribute to the drying out of the epidermis : cold, dry air or UV rays from the sun directly impact skin hydration.

Dry skin: why is it a problem?

dry skin is skin that has lost its ability to retain water. The latter, rather than being retained on the epidermis, evaporates. Surface lipids are produced in smaller quantities, and no longer form a homogeneous barrier. Since the barrier function of the skin is impaired, this allows the external attacks and irritating agents, such as allergens, to penetrate deeper into the epidermis. From then on, the skin becomes more vulnerable and more reactive, and is easily irritated.

L'exfoliation

If your skin is dry, you are likely producing a lot of dead skin. L'exfoliation allows you to eliminate them, to benefit from effective regeneration of your cells. In your routine for dry skin, opt for a gentle scrub and a melting texture: you will thus preserve as much as possible the few lipids present on your epidermis.

Be regular in your care

Your routine for dry skin must be respected every day, throughout. Take these treatments as moments to find yourself and relax after a long day.

Stay well hydrated: what foods and how much water?

Not surprisingly, to fight against dry skin, you must hydrate your body from the inside, by drinking lots of water! To be sure to drink enough, around 8 glasses of water, you can invest in a 1.5 L bottle, which you refill every morning. When you go to bed, it's non-negotiable, this water bottle must be empty!

Hydration also goes through diet. Stock up on fruits and vegetables, and look for essential fatty acids: they are found in avocado, fatty fish (salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel), in nuts (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts), or even in vegetable oils (rapeseed, flax, olive, etc.)!

Protect yourself from the sun, summer and winter

Although we happily protect ourselves from the sun in summer, we sometimes forget that we also need to do so in winter! However, if your skin is dry, UV rays contribute to premature aging. There sunscreen must therefore be part of your care routine for dry skin !
