summary of the article

What is blue light?

Blue light is part of the light visible to our eyes. It is the most energetic light that our retina receives, essential to create the phenomenon of vision. It is emitted by the sun, which is the major source of emissions. Indoors, we also find it in the LEDs of our domestic lightings and our screens.

Why is blue light harmful to the skin?

We know that blue light is harmful to the eyes because it weakens the retina and causes itchy eyes. It can also cause migraines, and alter the quality of sleep. But what we less know is that it is also harmful to our skin!

Indeed, the blue light produced by screens deteriorates the quality of the skin. It represents as much risk for the epidermis as pollution or tobacco, putting your cells under strain.

If the waves emitted by blue light are so harmful to the skin, it is because they penetrate your skin layers deeply, reaching the hypodermis! With its intense energy, blue light attacks all cellular constituents: lipids, proteins, DNA.

blue light poses various dangers to the skin. It leads to skin aging early, and causes oxidative stress at the cell level, by disrupting the balance of free radicals. When oxidative stress is caused by external elements (blue light, lifestyle, tobacco, pollution, etc.), free radicals attack cells and cause skin degradation, and accelerate skin aging.

But that's not all: blue light also causes tired skin , a dull and uneven complexion , leading to the formation of pigment spots , particularly in people with a phototype greater than 3 (Mediterranean type or black skin). ).

Protect your skin from the sun

Blue light is largely emitted by the sun! To protect your skin, be sure to apply a sunscreen that protects against HEV blue light when you are outdoors, and remember to reapply it several times during the day, especially if you are swimming. or if you spend a lot of time in the sun.

Avoid exposing yourself between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., as it is at this time of day that the sun's rays are strongest. If you have to be outside during these times, look for shade!

Avoid overexposure to screens

On average, we spend almost 6 hours on our LED screens. In order to protect the skin from blue light, it is therefore essential to start by reducing your screen time!

This is an opportunity to carry out a real digital detox, by going less on social networks, and dedicating moments of the day without a screen. Replace this sometimes addictive activity with reading, drawing, a manual activity, or sport.

On most smartphones, you can also adjust your device to have less blue and more yellow light. Be careful, however: this solution does not block all blue light, but it does reduce it slightly.

Use protective screens

To reduce exposure to UV rays emitted by screens, you can use special protective screens for your electronic devices. In fact, these filters, which are installed directly on your laptop, your smartphone or your tablet, reduce the quantity of waves emitted by the screen. This way you protect your skin!

Also remember to reduce the brightness of your screens when working on them. However, be careful not to lower it too much so as not to damage your eyes.

Adopt a suitable facial care routine

To protect your skin exposed to screens, you must implement an anti-blue light skincare routine . Opt for treatments that include antioxidant ingredients and anti-pollution ingredients. They strengthen the skin barrier against damage from artificial radiation. You can also look for ingredients such asvitamin C , retinol or even plant extracts, which protect your skin barrier .

It is essential to establish a complete anti-blue light care ritual. To do this, several steps are essential:

  • Remove your makeup carefully with a makeup remover lotion to rid your skin of impurities accumulated during the day;
  • Cleanse your skin with a purifying facial gel that gently exfoliates and purifies your skin;
  • Opt for a soothing face cream that contains anti-pollution active ingredients like ectoine . You can also turn to an anti-aging cream containing antioxidants like vitamin C ;
  • Use a lifting serum in addition to your day cream. It helps stimulate the production of collagen and elastin, which is slowed down with age, and which is damaged by blue light.

Also remember to clean, purify and moisturize the skin on your neck, which is also subject to blue light. The epidermis becomes oxygenated, and the skin aging process is slowed down!

Take care of your diet

Opt for a diet rich in antioxidants: here, you can favor vitamins A and C, E, which help fight effectively against free radicals and act on skin aging .

You can turn to carrots, oranges, lemons, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, but also fatty fish which are rich in omega-3 and vegetable oils.

To hydrate your skin from the inside, make sure to drink enough (at least 1.5L of water) during the day.
